About John Kelly

John Kelly is a Chicago based lighting designer for theatre, events and dance. Over the past decade of designing, his work has been seen at Blue Man Group Chicago, The Second City, Theatre Wit, About Face, Strawdog Theatre, Oracle Productions, Chicago Dramatists, Interobang Theatre, Red Twist Theatre, Sideshow, First Floor and more. He has been nominated five times for Outstanding Lighting Design in the Joseph Jefferson Awards.

His design work is based in collaboration. He values closely working with the other designers, directors, performers and artists to create cohesive worlds by utilizing old and new technology and techniques.

Separate from design, John has maintained a strong knowledge of theatre technology. He is currently the Lead Technical Director for The Second City, overseeing their technical operations in Chicago, Toronto, New York and on tour. Past positions include the Electrics Supervisor for Blue Man Group Chicago and Chicago Children’s Theatre and Dimmer Operator for South Side Season 2 on HBO Max.
